Top 10 Power Capes

Long gone are the days of fashion that was made to last: Madeleine Vionnet, Cristobal Balenciaga, Coco Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Dior… Clothes were made with love and care, and they actually stand the test of time.

If you don’t believe me, visit the latest fashion exhibition at the Victoria & Albert museum in London about the work of Christian Dior.

Yes, if you love fashion it’s still highly exciting to look into catwalk shows and spot trends and inspiring work, but it looks like most designers are simply imitating leading brands and renowned fashion influencers.

Except for a few incredible creative geniuses, who manage to present something different each season without compromising on their brand identity, fashion and even luxury fashion just looks rushed! Ideas don’t seem to have enough time to mature.

Undoubtedly due to the current astonishing speed of this industry and our obsession with what’s next, always wanting new everything.

It’s time to rethink the way fashion operates. There are some inspiring business models, such as Bionda Castana who no longer presents any collection, and focus on hand-made shoes that can be ordered directly online.

Maybe shops could simply become sample displays, where people would touch the fabrics and collect their orders (made online or in store) or have them delivered at home.

This would also require state of the art body measurement technology so that clothes or shoes could be produced according to exact specifications of each individual’s body

But for now, we do have endless collections and it’s a mission to find something worth wearing. For Autumn/Winter 2019, a key trend is definitely the cape, the ultimate fashion statement.

My grandmother, who was also an emigrant in Paris, gave me a proper velvet black cape she bought here a few decades ago.

It was definitely made with love, I continue wearing it to this day and it always gives me some sense of empowerment. Here's my selection of the best capes on the catwalk. Enjoy!
