The Victoria & Albert Museum has opened its doors to a groundbreaking exhibition that pays homage to the world's most iconic performers.

The term "diva" originated from the word "goddess" and has come to represent a fusion of divine talent, magnetic presence, and ambitious performance.

This exhibition challenges our perception of the diva, highlighting the multifaceted role they have played in shaping popular music and culture over the span of more than a century.

The museum shines a spotlight on the empowered expression of femininity in performance. The exhibition unfolds with a carefully curated selection of 250 objects from the V&A's collections and generous loans from around the globe.

Diva not only celebrates their exceptional talent but also delves into their personal stories, revealing how they have used their art to inspire generations.

A personal favourite is a reproduction of handwritten lyrics of 'Cry Baby' by Janis Joplin. I used to sing her songs when I was a teenager, and recently watched a documentary about her on Apple TV that brought me to tears.

I also love Elizabeth Taylor's headpiece from Cleopatra, a mesmerising film that is renowned for the incredible performances and extraordinary costume design. The exhibition features a film scene where Cleopatra demands Marc Anthony to kneel. It's just supreme!

It also explores what it means to be a diva in today's ever-evolving world, as artists and their fans continue to redefine and transform the title across boundaries and genders.

The exhibition delves into the role divas have played in effecting social and political change, using their fame and popularity to advocate for civil rights, female empowerment, LGBTQ+ rights, and more.

The exhibition starts with a romantic journey from the 1830s to the 1960s, tracing the lineage of female artistry alongside the development of photography, film, and recording music.

It examines the struggles and successes of remarkable Victorian opera singers, highlighting their position in a patriarchal society and their fight for agency and freedom.

Then It pays tribute to the big voices, and the undeniable influence of artists like Shirley Bassey and Tina Turner. Divas in the 21st century become game changers, philanthropists and entrepreneurs, from Beyoncé and Rihanna to Lady Gaga.

We encounter the diva's fluidity, as the concept is harnessed by artists of all genders to express empowered femininity and identity.

The exhibition also acknowledges the close relationship between divas and the drag community, where performers draw inspiration from generations of divas to create their own captivating personas.

Diva is a testament to the unstoppable creativity, transformation, and reinvention that define the legacy of divas throughout history and their enduring impact on the world of entertainment.

It invites us to immerse ourselves in the glamour, power, and vulnerability of these extraordinary performers, leaving us in awe of the remarkable talents that have shaped our cultural landscape.
