New Year's Resolutions

With the beginning of a new year comes a sense of a fresh start, but actually we can reset at any given time. When did you last consider who you are, what are you doing with your life and where are you heading to?

No, this isn’t about lecturing anyone or giving tips about how to answer these profound questions. I’m afraid you have to figure that out for yourself.

In any case, there’s always a starting point and if we look into the fashion industry in particular, when speaking at ‘VOICES’, an annual event led by The Business of Fashion, Alexi Lubomirski gave a heartfelt and inspiring testimony on sustainability.

Some seemingly negative events in our life can actually trigger a deep change in us, spurred by the contemplation about our personal impact in the world around us or even the world at large.

Greta Thunberg is definitely a prime example of someone with an acute sense of personal responsibility and the far-reaching repercussions this can have on many other people.

The point is not so much the spectrum of influence someone is able to achieve but the level of honesty one can have with oneself and sheer determination to make a difference. It can never be said enough, “be the change you want to see in the world”.

Personally, I’m still considering how to go about doing this and have a few ideas worth pursuing but they require time and financial investment to mature.

One step at the time, and funnily enough the first can simply be to write things down on a piece of paper, and explore different possibilities.

Once you narrow it down to a main point, just create an action plan and add each step to your 2020 diary (with reasonably achievable timeframes). It's worth remembering nothing is set in stone and this is undoubtedly a dynamic process, as it's important to take into account the inevitable changes life will throw at us.

In Lubomirski's case, the Creatives for Change initiative emerged organically through different situations coming together. The driving force was his willingness to make a positive difference and we can all embrace this too. Good luck with everything!
