Met Gala 2019! Camp: Notes on Fashion

The Costume Institute Gala at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art is the most eagerly awaited red carpet event of the year. On May 6, we can expect to see the most renowned people in fashion, film, music and art celebrating the grand opening of its latest exhibition.

Celebrities become particularly audacious to have fun with fashion at the Met Gala, let's face it we all love themed parties, there's nothing quite like it to break the ice. And this year, there will be no limits to creativity as the exhibition is framed around Susan Sontag’s seminal 1964 essay Notes on "Camp".

As the title suggests, the concept is open to interpretation. According to the online Cambridge English dictionary camp refers to:

1." (A man) behaving and dressing in a way that some people think typical of a gay man;

2. Using bright colours, loud sounds, unusual behaviour, etc. in a humorous way."

The met Gala is chaired by US Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour who will be joined this year by Lady Gaga, Alessandro Michele, Harry Styles and Serena Williams.

This is above all a fundraising event for the museum with a highly curated guest list, but its impact has a significantly wide reach in media and social media, far more effective than much more expensive advertising and marketing campaigns.

It's a funny world we live in, when the unity of Europe is being challenged, North Korea and Russia leaders meet, Chinese influence is growing in the UK and beyond (not only in fashion but also in technology now), US is lead by Trump and governments remain oblivious to climate change...

We do need a bit of light entertainment to cope with all the alarming signs of a bleak future. It's a bit like in Brazil, the darkness of the violence and poverty of shanty towns is in stark contrast with the opulence and joy of Carnival.

Yin and yang, people who remain positive and believe in a better world should definitely be cherished. Met Gala gathers people from creative industries, who tend to have a more holistic perspective on others, beyond borders or "labels", as Anna Wintour says on the video below. This is definitely worth spreading...
