Despite being home to numerous movie premieres, London doesn’t really have a MET Gala, so the Fashion Awards represent the red carpet event of the year, attracting more and more celebrities from around the world.
Obviously 2020 disrupted the whole events industry, so this time there was neither red carpet glamour nor after party for the virtual event, usually held at the magnificent Royal Albert Hall.… Nonetheless, it was still a celebration of talent!
The first time I’ve attended the Fashion Awards was in 2012, producing a short video right after the ceremony, just announcing the winners.
It’s interesting to note some of the winners are the same after 8 years, but much has changed, as this time everything was reduced to a film, which you can actually watch online.
Priyanka Chopra Jonas, the new British Fashion Council Ambassador for Positive Change, has presented the winners of the Community category. The Fashion Awards 2020 also included accolades for Creativity, Environment and People.
In total, there are 20 honourees including the editor-in-chief of British Vogue, Edward Eninful, Stella McCartney, Anya Hindmarch, Michael Halpern, Gabriela Hearst, Christopher Raeburn and many more who are shaping the fashion industry and “have led change”… Discover all the winners here.
The trophy was made from upcycled plastic waste recovered from remote islands, waters and coastlines. The BFC worked with Parley for the Oceans, who commissioned the 3D-printing design specialist Nagami to create it.
This signals a shift in the right direction, fashion definitely needs to become more inclusive and live up to the responsibility of caring for others and the environment. It would be great if this could extend to other industries across the board.

In previous Fashion Awards ceremonies, there was definitely a lot of style going on, but hardly any substance.
This year was the other way around, and rightfully so. It felt appropriate for the times we’re living at the moment. As Coco Chanel once said: "Fashion is always of the time in which you live.”
Substance was definitely lacking, but hopefully next year there will be a proper ceremony. Red carpet style is always the cherry at the top of the cake, isn’t it?
