How to Become Resilient

It’s been a while since we have been locked at home. It’s difficult to cope with such dramatic turn of events and circumstances vary considerably for each one of us, both in terms of our work and personal life.

It can be a harrowing experience of struggling to meet basic needs, going through grief or feeling lonely. Inevitably, even those fortunate enough to continue living with comfort and ease will be challenged one way or another.

Our freedom is impaired and we are all stuck at home to fight an invisible but quite tangible enemy. It’s really inspiring to see people coming together and connecting through technology to support one another.

Celebrities engage in solidarity initiatives on social media, such as reading bed time stories to raise funds for children who rely on school dinners for their nourishment.

Unfortunately we cannot take things at face value. A famous fashion designer is posting caring messages on Instagram but factory workers who produce some of the brand’s clothes in the UK have 0 hour contracts, which means if they don’t work, they don’t get paid.

Nonetheless, this whole situation seems to bring to light our interdependence. We are increasingly appreciative of all those who are risking their lives to save us and others. Before this happened, the feeling was that everyone was living in their own little bubble.

It’s worth remembering we are not alone and can always learn from one another. People have different ways of becoming resilient: from having a daily schedule, to being creative, dancing away, exercising, reading or simply meditating.

It’s up to each of us to realise what helps us particularly. For some people it may be crucial to carry on being productive while for others, it may be better to use this opportunity to stop and spend quality time with oneself.

What’s your poison? No, that’s not a good question. Unlike Obelix and Asterix, there’s no magic potion to make us invincible. But there’s something that is so engaging that makes us loose track of time. What is it for you? If you don’t know, this is a great opportunity to find out.
