His photographs are now an integral part of fashion history, but they continue to live in the memory of all women who posed for him. I was definitely enchanted by Patrick Demarchelier’s work, and his unique way of capturing women’s beauty. It was sad to hear about his death, just a couple of days ago.
Demarchelier was born in France, but left Paris in 1974 to move to New York. He started his career as an assistant of Hans Feurer, a Swiss photographer who worked with Vogue.
But he attributed his success to the fashion editor Grace Coddington, with whom he has worked since her time at British Vogue, and carried on doing so when she changed to American Vogue in 1988.

Throughout his career, he has often worked with Vogue, so much so that in the 2006 film The Devil Wears Prada, he was called upon quite a few times. His work was also often published by Harper’s Bazaar and other renowned magazines.
He has also photographed advertising campaigns for many luxury brands, including Chanel, Saint Laurent and Dior. In 2011, a collection of his work for Christian Dior was published by Rizzoli - Dior Couture, featuring over one hundred gowns designed by Dior himself and some of his successors.

His photographs of Princess Diana are iconic, like so many of his covers and even photo shoots. We can watch him working in the first “Sex and the City” movie, when he photographs Sarah Jessica Parker’s character in different wedding gowns for Vogue magazine.
The announcement of his death was initially made on Instagram. Many women who posed for Demarchelier payed tribute to him on the platform, sharing a fond time when he photographed them, undoubtedly a testimony to the magnitude of his incredible body of work.
