How to celebrate in a different way
Christmas is fast approaching and this year will be different for everyone. My family always gathers around a big dinner table full of delicious food, but this year we are all going to be apart, and use online video calls to get in touch with one another. It’s better to be safe than sorry.
Whatever our plans, this is a great opportunity to switch off from social media (and work), investing in some quality time with oneself and others. The world will seemingly stand still for a few days, as if giving us permission to connect with ourselves and others on a deeper level.
When working on online content, one doesn’t have much choice but to plan things ahead and schedule publishing dates. Nonetheless, on my personal website and social media, I tend to be quite spontaneous so there won’t be any updates for a week or so.
This morning Bertrand Guyon, from Maria Grazia Chiuri’s studio at Dior, posted a few photos on Instagram about the work of artist Claude Lalanne for Yves Saint Laurent in 1969, when the designer was still alive.
It’s clear what goes around comes around! It’s possible to see the ripple effect of this collaboration in the work of many designers working today, from Tom Ford to Daniel Roseberry, artistic director of Schiaparelli.
Anthony Vaccarello’s latest collection for Saint Laurent (spring summer 2021) also got everyone excited! It was not only a brilliant idea to stage a catwalk show in the middle of the desert, but there was an impressive level of research into the archives of the brand.
A poignant personal interpretation has really blossomed in a few spectacular pieces like the floral print dress below. Some catwalk shows have attempted to simulate the desert with real sand or nature’s dynamic transformation from day to night, but this time, the whole concept was quite literal.
It was poetic to watch models walking in sand dunes from daylight to nighttime, with fire punctuating the ‘catwalk’ offering a magic light to the whole show. It’s an enchanting video that you can watch online.
The fashion world is divided about comfort versus glamour and this collection clearly shows you can combine the two, and be stylish while also feeling comfortable.
Obviously brands will push their party wear and some women may invest in a new sparkling dress to have a sense of celebration, but maybe this year we could wear again something that evokes a good time for us, already emotionally charged.
The main point is to make the most of whatever circumstances we find ourselves in, letting go of the heaviness that marked this year, and preparing to embrace the new year with a different sense of perspective, after our priorities in life became so bluntly clear.
Love is what matters most. And yes, a bit of sparkle is always a good idea, not only on a dress but also on a glass of champagne! Merry Christmas!
