It's not easy to stand out as a costume designer when Hollywood insists on traditional female roles that don't represent real life. There are a lot of stereotypes that the film industry has created and nurtured around women, so it's highly refreshing to watch Molly's Game. This is the real story of a powerful woman who has taken the reins of a gambling empire. Costume designer Susan Lyall is responsible for the stunning looks of this movie directed by Aaron Sorkin, and the leading role is brilliantly played by Jessica Chastain.
“I spoke to Molly a few times, and obviously appearance is very important. We talked a little bit about how she judged what was an appropriate thing to wear. She was kind of concerned about always looking a little bit businesslike — even if she had a plunging neckline, she’d throw on a blazer, just some element to suggest no-nonsense.” Susan Lyall speaking to Vulture
The real Molly Bloom claims to have never worn the same outfit in front of the same players. She was able to adapt her style to any environment, bringing just enough attention to herself and making a conscious decision to both fit in, and yet stand out. In her case, clothes were used to convey power.
“In a room full of powerful men, her meticulous appearance levelled the playing field. Her dress was her armour, and she dressed carefully—sexy but not vulgar. I had a lot of fun working with costume designer Susan Lyall and pulling inspiration from pop culture icons.” Jessica Chastain speaking to Town & Country
