Much has already been written about the new editor of British Vogue, Edward Enninful, he is the first man to hold the post in the magazine's history of over a century, he is not from a privileged background and he is also black. He arrives with an impressive career, numerous famous friends and a huge Instagram following.
Enninful wants to create a Vogue that is inclusive and representative of the world today. Many in the fashion industry voiced their support for this new approach to a magazine traditionally white and upper class. The 70s look on the cover is reminiscent of a chic allure that many of us will always associate with Vogue, and of course the choice of a mixed race and activist model was much acclaimed.
We are excited to see someone shaking things up and moving fashion in the right direction, leading by example and inspiring others to be also more inclusive. It's also refreshing to see prominent authors such as Zadie Smith writing for the magazine, which clearly brings substance and not just style.
But... (Yes, there is a but...) What is Vogue? Above all, Vogue is a fantasy world of beauty and luxury, and like some charismatic women, born to be admired. It's clear he was very keen on proving his point, unfortunately to an extent where the magazine inside does not always match the cover.
This is just his first issue, so we hope Vogue will find its way to represent the world today without undermining its potential to make us dream.
